I’m Greg Makoul, an internationally recognized medical educator who joined the College Matters team to work with people interested in applying to medical schools, residency programs, and related graduate programs.
I help students articulate their ‘why’ (the reason they want to engage in years of hard work) as well as their ‘why me’ (what differentiates them from other smart, capable young people). Moreover, my experience in both academic medicine and the ‘real world’ of healthcare offers the kind of perspective that students need to make informed decisions about their path forward.
My Approach
I earned my BA (Biology and Psychology) at Wesleyan, PhD (Communication Studies) at Northwestern and, later in my career, MS (Health Care Delivery Science) at Dartmouth. My path is unusual: After completing my PhD work, I did a postdoc in Medical Education at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and then joined the faculty, where I became a full Professor of Medicine, founded and directed the Center for Communication + Medicine, was a chief architect of curriculum reform, and led research with impact on everyday clinical practice. After 15 years at Northwestern, I devoted six years to care transformation as Chief Innovation Officer and Chief Academic Officer at Saint Francis Care, an integrated delivery system in Hartford, where I was responsible for Graduate Medical Education. I subsequently founded a successful startup that was named one of the 100 companies in the world with the greatest potential to change healthcare. At present, I am on the voluntary Faculty of Medicine at Yale School of Medicine, Clinical Professor of Medicine at the UConn School of Medicine, and associate editor of Patient Education and Counseling.

I have devoted my career to reinforcing the humanity in healthcare and am very interested in helping students find their best path forward.
