Keep in mind that the process varies by state. While some states allow you to begin the application online, others, such as Connecticut, require an in-person visit or appointment at a DMV or other state office to complete the process. Be sure to review your state's requirements before you go, including which documents you'll need to bring.

A note about REAL ID: A REAL ID-compliant identification card can be useful for air travel and other federal identification purposes. However, as of September 1, 2026, REAL ID is not required for FAFSA identity/fraud verification purposes. A qualifying government-issued identification card does not need to be REAL ID-compliant solely for FAFSA verification.
